IJM previews the 2018 College Football opening weekend

August 21, 2018 by robmcclel Leave a Comment

I typically couldn’t care less about rankings this time of year. But, for the purposes of discussion (and because it’s fun), let’s take a gander at yesterday’s first AP Poll.

Top 5 are as follows…

  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Georgia
  4. Wisconsin
  5. Ohio State

No real surprises there. The only cavoite I’d add is OSU at 5. If by some miracle Urban loses his job (which, sadly, isn’t gonna happen), that whole program could nose-dive without its leader.

The top two on this list are absolutely frightening. Bama is Bama every season. The difference in this year and previous years, however, is that with Tua Tagovailoa under center, they can actually throw the football with a modicum of consistency. Combine that with their o-line, running game, and a defense that’s always stout under Saban, and the Tide may be tougher than ever in 2018.

Clemson, on the other hand, is just as frightening on account of their defensive line. I kid you not, out of the four starters, three if not all four will go in the first round of next year’s NFL Draft. Some are calling this the best defensive line IN HISTORY. That’s how good they are.

Other Takeaways from the poll:

FSU checks in at 19: Florida State came in at the same spot in the first Coaches Poll, and I’m good with that. We’re unproven with a first-year head coach and all new systems on both sides of the ball, plus we’re coming off a 6-loss season. People are right to doubt us.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If FUS ends the season at 9-3 — with this schedule, this offensive line, this linebacker corpse, and all this change — that’s a fantastic conclusion to year one of a new regime.

Note about the schedule: FSU plays four of the teams on this list in 2018 (VA Tech, Notre Dame, Miami, Clemson), plus NC State with Heisman candidate Ryan Finley on the road, Florida at home, and a mean Boston College team that many believe will cause issues for of a lot of teams this year.

No matter how you slice it, 2018 is gonna be a tough haul for the Noles.

Florida is MIA: It’s NOT a great… day to be a Florida Gator, and it hasn’t been for quite some time. I maintain that Ron Mullen was the right here in Gainesville, but dude better make an impact now because he’s getting his clock cleaned on the recruiting trail.

What a slate for opening weekend: Wives/girlfriends, please do the right thing and give your husbands/boyfriends a day pass to fly the couch for the entirety of opening day, September 1. There are some FANTASTIC matchups to start the season, and frankly they’ve earned it.

Let’s take a look…

  • Alabama vs. Louisville — I know Lamar Jackson is gone, but Sneaky B. Petrino is still one helluva coach on gameday. I’ll take Bama for the win but expect some Cardinal surprises along the way.
  • Michigan at Notre Dame — In what is undoubtedly a make or break year for Michigan HC Jim Harbaugh, the Wolverines head to South Bend to open their season versus a great Fighting Irish defense. This one’s gonna be a war!
  • Auburn vs. Washington — Auburn returns a strong squad, and no one believes in the Pac 12. That said, both teams bring explosive offenses, which should make this one tons of fun to watch.
  • LSU vs. Miami — The Canes’ season will rise and fall on the arm of their Malik Rosier. Their defense is spectacular, but they got a lot of breaks last season. If they don’t get more production from the QB position, I think they’ll struggle. If Rosier or the kid behind him emerges, though, look for Miami to dominate the Coastal Division en route to the ACC title game.

In closing, I’d like to end this post with a “get off my lawn” rant on a trend that’s quickly (and alarmingly) becoming the norm in today’s college football.

Notice that of all the matchups above, only one (Michigan/ND) has an “at” in the listing. The others have a “versus.” That’s because the vs. matchups are all taking place at neutral sites.

I DO NOT approve of this. College football matchups are meant to be played on college campuses — period — unless they’re bowl matchups. I don’t give a flying rat turd in a handbasket about traveling to Atlanta, Dallas, or Orlando for a regular season CFB game. I just don’t. If FSU plays Texas, I want the Horns in Tallahassee and the Noles in Austin. Anything else is just an NFL game, light edition.

I get it. Big markets equal big money. I still don’t care.

Stop trying to turn college football into pro football, NCAA. Those of us who prefer the former do so for a reason. Stop screwing with it.

That’s all I’ve got for now, y’all. Feel free to weigh in via the comments below, and best of luck to your respective teams in 2018… unless, of course, your teams are Florida or Miami, in which case I hope you tank epically. ?

Cheers, and GO NOLES!!!

This Seminole alum is taking a stand

November 27, 2017 by robmcclel Leave a Comment

As of today, I’m no longer on the fence about Jimbo Fisher. Time for him to go. On a day when every major school with an opening is orbiting their candidate of choice, he played the “I don’t talk about other jobs when I’ve got games to plan for” card, effectively leaving the entire Florida State program in limbo.

Newsflash, you self-absorbed, egomaniacal putz: the game in question is ULM. Charles Kelly could beat that squad with a blindfold, a fifth of JD, and your scout team. What this fanbase needed from you today was either A, a definitive, “I love FSU and I’m not going anywhere,” in which case we could all look forward to our crappy bowl game in Perry, or B., “I’m headed to College Station,” in which case FSU could start vetting their top candidates for your replacement (you know, while they’re still available).

Alas, Jimbo can’t do that. Why? Because as usual, it’s all about him.

Screw this frickin’ Kardashian wannabe. Let’s move on to someone who actually wants to be a Nole.

PEACE!!!

New book, character sports allegiances, and early CFB thoughts

July 29, 2016 by robmcclel Leave a Comment

Greetings, all!

HOLY FREAKIN’ CRAP, IT’S HOT!!!

Moving on.

Update on the new book

I managed to bang out another thousand words this morning, thus bringing my total so far to just under 30k. At this rate, I’ll have a first draft by the end of September, and a beta manuscript by Christmas. I say that, mind you, as this story grows like a weed every time I sit down at my computer. Seriously, when I first started this project, I expected it to be a nice, compact little 300 page scifi/alt history adventure tale. But no, it’s gotta run off and get all complex and epic on me… stupid imagination. LOL

OBX

Back to the matter at hand: I will take a break from writing next weekend so the Mrs. and I can vacay in the Outer Banks (OBX) for a few days. I’m really excited about it, too. That’s a part of NC that I’ve yet to visit and I hear it’s gorgeous. It’s also loaded with American history, and I’ll need that as research material for my next book… more on that in later blogs. 😉

Oh, one other thing.  I found out last night that Smalls and I are going hand-gliding in Kitty Hawk on Friday so keep an eye on my Facebook page for photos after.

Trip Hackett, sports enthusiast

As any reader of The Mako Saga knows, my characters tend to be sports fans. Shocker, I know. First there was Mac, the Yankees fan. Then came Link, the Bronco, Hamish the All Black, Danny, the Dolphin, and Lee, the Buccaneer — all of whom cheer for Florida State because, well, that’s what good guys do.

So, where are the allegiances of my new guy, Trip Hackett, native son of the Tar Heel state?

Drum roll please….

Braves Logo

Yep. My man is a Braves fan.

I know, I know. Most locals from the OBX area tend to support Washington or Baltimore teams, but hear me out on this. Right out of the gate, I knew I wanted the All-American element of baseball in this story. Thematically, it just fits, and when you read it next year, you’ll understand why. That said, North Carolina has no MLB club, which leaves me with two options: the Nationals (aka the Montreal Expos prior to 2005) or the more likely choice, the Oriels.

There’s just one problem with the latter: While the Os were solid during Trip’s childhood in the mid-90s, they paled in comparison to the Braves who were at the peak of their popularity with guys like Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, and Chipper Jones. Add to that Atlanta’s accessibility back then (they were televised almost nightly on TBS) and LOTS of people outside of Fulton County, Georgia were Braves fans.

So, there you have it. My guy’s a Bravo.

Okay, so maybe there’s one more reason. *sigh* Fact is, a lot of my peeps back home still haven’t forgiven me for making Mac a Yankee. So there. We square now or what?

Ridiculously early thoughts on college football

With ACC and SEC Media Days having just ended, the time is almost upon us to start talking college football.  It’s a beautiful thing, isn’t it? Like Christmas or Happy Hour or BOGO milkshake day at Cookout.

Coming out of ACC Kickoff, a lot of folks are picking Clemson to repeat as conference champs. And you know what? I’m good with that. They’ve got arguably the nation’s top player under center (Deshaun Watson) and a full arsenal of weapons at his disposal.

That’s the group, you’ll recall, that pushed Bama’s defense to the brink in last year’s national title game. They’re a great squad, deserving of all the accolades they’ve gotten.

Now, do I think they’ll be conference champs? No, I don’t. It’ll be Florida State, for three reasons.

  • Reason 1: The Tigers’ defense is poised to take a significant step back this season due to heavy losses in the draft and graduation.
  • Reason 2: Clemson will travel to Tallahassee this fall for what will likely be one of, if not the biggest game of the CFB season.
  • Reason 3: In addition to home field advantage, FSU has two other things going for it: a defense tat’s expected to be ferocious and a generational talent at running back who’s healthy for the first time in a year.

It’s the tried and true formula, folks — a running game that slashes and a defense that smashes. Advantage, Noles.

It’s also worth noting that Louisville could be decent, provided of course that Bobby Petrino can steer clear of mopeds and co-eds for the duration of the season.

As for the rest of the ACC… eh, we’ll see.

That’s it, people. I’m off to that place that gives me money to play on Twitter all day. (No really. I’m in charge of social media.) Take care, email me anytime if you’ve got questions, and for the love of Pete, STAY COOL!!!

Cheers,

Ian
